LEAD POSITION

 

Referee gets ahead of the play to the Lead position

 

Referee stands in the right position as the Lead Referee

·       Stands to the left side of the basket

·       Stands at a 45 degree angle

·       Moves accordingly to see the play

·       Administers out of bounds correctly

Referee is aware of players in the keyhole

·       Referee uses their voice to remove players in the keyhole for three seconds

 

 

TRAIL POSITION

 

Referee trails the play

 

Referee stands in the right position as the Trail Referee

·       Gets over half way (near 3 point line as required)

·       Moves accordingly to see the play

·       Administers out of bounds correctly

 

 

VIOLATIONS

 

Referee recognises violations that need to be called

·       Defence cannot be put at a disadvantage by  offensive players violating e.g. considerable travel that beats the defence

Referee uses their voice to acknowledge violations  that need not be called

·       Referee understands the level of the players and the need not to make calls

·       Referee adequately communicates with the player to educate them not to violate

 

 

FOULS

 

Referee recognises fouls that need to be called

·       Players cannot be put at a disadvantage by illegal contact

Referees use their voice to acknowledge contact that may be left

·       Referee understands the level of contact that is acceptable at the level

·       Referee adequately communicates with the player to educate them not to foul

 

 

MECHANICS AND SIGNALS

 

Referee calls out of bounds correctly

·       Right referee makes the call

·       Referee signals out of bounds correctly – vocalise who receives the ball plus points correct direction Players do not stand under the basket to inbound the ball

·       Players do not stand under the basket when inbounding the ball after a violation or foul

 

Referee calls a violation correctly

·       Referee stops the game with the correct signal

·       Referee vocalises the violation committed

·       Referee uses the correct signal to advise player of the violation committed

Referee calls a foul correctly

·       Referee stops the game with the correct signal

·       Referee uses their voice to advise the player of the foul

·       Referee uses their voice, the correct signals and procedure to advise scorebench of the foul

Referee goes to Trail position after calling the foul;  old Trail referee goes to Lead position

·       Non calling referee ensures players are set up ready to play whilst co-official makes the call

Trail referee only counts the basket

·       Lead referee should not be looking at the basket

Referee administers substitutes correctly

·       Referee signals to co-official sub

·       Referee beckons players on the court with correct signals

·       Referee acknowledges when all players are substituted correctly and player to recommence
